another interview with Alan, dedicate to those who play Farmville...

Alan McGee: Interviewing a Legend (Part 1)

Stating that Alan McGee is a cultural phenomenon is a gross understatement. The man is responsible for the seminal record label Creation Records, home to some of the most influential bands in the world like Primal Scream, Jesus & Mary Chain, Teenage Fanclub, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Swervedriver, Slowdive, and Oasis.
McGee has since retired from the music industry and has focused on raising his daughter and tending to his farm. He takes a break between milking cows and castrating horses to talk to us:
How is it like being Alan McGee?
It changes daily.
What was the reason for putting up Creation Records in 1983? Was it in response to a dreary music scene? To provide a haven for your mates? To have a label and release your own tunes? Or all of the above?
All of the above.
Felt’s “Primitive Painters,” featuring Liz Fraser, is a cult hit. Do you think that it’s the band’s best song?
I never listen to Felt anymore. I actually can’t remember any of their songs.
In 1992, you sold half of the company to Sony apparently due to your “lifestyle expenses.” It is also known that you hated Sony and the 90’s. Is this still the case?
No, I am a farmer. Why would I hate a record company.
Having a different sound from your other acts on Creation, what really made you sign Oasis? Did you see pound signs? A way out of your “(90’s predicament?”
I just loved them so I signed them.
Will you ever forgive the Labour Government ?
No, a bunch of cunts. I don’t dig them at all.
Name your top 5 Creation acts.
Oasis! Oasis! Oasis! Oasis! Oasis!
