Blues backing the Royal British Legion

MANCHESTER - Manchester City is proud to pledge its support to the Poppy Appeal, continuing its long association with the Royal British Legion.
This year’s club activity will focus around the Birmingham City home game on Saturday, November 13.
The players’ match shirts will again be embroidered with the poppy motif and fans will be invited to submit bids to purchase these collectors’ items, with all proceeds going to the Royal British Legion.
Amongst other activity, current servicemen from the 1st Battalion, the Mercian Regiment (Cheshire), recently returned from duty in Afghanistan, will assist with the distribution of poppies before the game and will also lead out the teams before the referee signals a minute’s silence.
The British Legion, which will celebrate its 90th anniversary next year, provides financial and welfare support to the hundreds of thousands of personnel who have served or who are serving in the British Armed Forces.
The Poppy Appeal aims to raise £36million this year alone, with targeted support though this year’s campaign for the injured, wounded and bereaved of the Afghanistan conflict.
Garry Cook, CEO of Manchester City, said:
“Our annual Remembrance Day activities are a source of pride to everyone at the club and we are delighted to again support the British Legion’s Poppy Appeal. It is impossible to overstate the debt we owe to our armed forces and we would encourage all of our fans to wear their poppy with pride".
Jeff Harrison, County Manager for the Royal British Legion in Greater Manchester, said:
“Manchester City’s ongoing support of the Poppy Appeal is truly invaluable and we are very grateful for their contribution. Last year’s fundraising with Manchester City raised nearly £12,000, the highest total from any single venue in all of Greater Manchester, and we hope to do even better this year.
“This year’s appeal will focus on service personnel returning from conflict in Afghanistan, for whom we have already successfully campaigned for £12million in increased compensation payments for the seriously wounded. With your support, we can help tens of thousands of more to rebuild their lives following service.”
The team first wore the poppy emblem on their match shirts in 2003 and auctions of the shirts in this and subsequent years have raised tens of thousands of pounds for the Appeal.
Further information regarding the shirt auction will be announced following the Birmingham game.
