re-reading Orwell's 1984 nowadays is different from when you had to read it at school in the 80's, there's a kind of Spandau Ballet vibe, which is ironic 'cause this song is from 1986. Though there's no "big love" on the horizon. I mean especially in Italy, "...we'll cross the lines and dance upon the streets... there's a scar right through my heart but I'll bare it again... oh I don't know where love has gone, and in this troubled land desperatiiiion keeps us strong... It's a terrible beauty we've made... so we make our love on wasteland"
