r.i.p. Socrates

SAO PAULO - I'm sorry and all, of course, but I see the words "legend", "hero", etc. are a bit abused around, these days (see also Noel Gallagher, "God", "genius"...). He was a stylish player, but didn't win anything important. A real "legend" takes his team to great victories. He had many vices (cigarettes&alcohol and more...), even when he was a player, that's why had so many health problems. The only season he played abroad was in Italy and he failed. Even his most famous goal (vs Italy) was useless and not so great. Overrated and unlucky.
If one doesn't win, as we say: it's "a lot of smoke and a few roast" (smoke is approriate in this case). As when foreign people talk shit of Italian football: of course, 'cause they're not good enough to play here.
Brazilian Socrates has died aged 57 after suffering with an intestinal infection.
The 1982 World Cup player was admitted to hospital and placed on life-support on Thursday after falling ill during a meal at a hotel in Sao Paulo.
It was the third time the ex Brazilian national team captain had been rushed to hospital in recent months, having first fallen ill in the summer.
He was admitted to Sao Paulo's Albert Einstein hospital on August 20 suffering from internal bleeding, and was re-admitted on September 6 with the same problem.
The hospital said Socrates was suffering from septic shock as a result of the infection.
He underwent dialysis treatment and was breathing with the help of a ventilator, but was unable to recover.
Socrates was regarded as one of the greatest players of his generation, a cultured midfielder who had 60 caps for the Brazil national side, scoring 22 goals.
He was from a rich family and nicknamed O Doutor - The Doctor - as he graduated as a medical student during the early years of his football career.
Most closely associated with Corinthians, his only spell abroad was playing in Italy for Fiorentina for the 1984-85 season, though he also played 12 minutes for West Yorkshire team Garforth Town in 2004.
Socrates' most memorable moment came in the 1982 World Cup in Spain where the elegant midfielder scored a nice goal against Italy (won by Italy 3-2, Italy then 1982 world champion).

(3 goals by Paolo Rossi, my legend when I was a child)
