Stay young and invincible

...come what may, we're unstoppable.
Released on 7-7-97, the first song recorded at the 'Be here now' sessions.
Another tribute to one that's always been my favourite song, it came out just a few days before the best days of my life, and it reminds me of that period. I know Bon Jovi copied a bit of this song, but I don't remember which one by him.
Controversially 'flipped' by Radio 1, who deemed its breezy good vibes preferable to the a-side's lenght and alleged 'weirdness'. Hence, perhaps, not regarded too fondly by its author.
Recorded at Abbey Road before being evicted for making too much noise, Stay young saw Oasis following in the great tradition of Noel's heroes The Jam by releasing a single that was overshadowed by a flipside gem. No matter that the a-side had the Apocalypse Now video, that Noel couldn't stand the song - too Britpop for his liking - or even that Stay young was teen ideals sung by men long since past their 18th birthdays. This was the sound of a band who believed they were invincible. "We're making music for teenagers", claimed Noel at the time. "No shame in that".
Noel: "That was actually going to be on 'Be here now' but it got diched in favour of...I don't fucking know. But anyway, I got a phone call off Liam. And I never get a phone call from Liam unless it's a problem. Meg's going, 'Liam's on the phone'. And you have to go, '(Muttering under breath) Cunt'. Then, '(Extravagantly friendly) ALRIGHT MATE!' '(Threatening Liam voice) Why's fucking 'Stay young' not on that album?' 'Um, I was gonna put it on'. 'Right, that's alright then...'. So he wanted it on, 'cos he like it. But I don't. I suppose people like it because it says, "Hey, stay young and invincible". And, "Come what may, my faith's unshakeable". I like that line. But it's a bit happy, it's a bit of a jolly pop song. And I don't really like the way it sounds, either. But if other people like it, and if Liam likes it, then it must go on. And on it went. But that'll be the one I'll be skipping past. Just after 'D'you know what I mean?' came out they played it loads on Radio 1, for some reason which I could never fathom out." Probably because it was shorter and uptempo.
Not so short, more than 5 minutes. I love it.
